Green Bay Area Public School District Announces Community Engagement Sessions for 2013

Green Bay Area Public School District leaders are dedicated to ensuring all students graduate college, career and community ready, and are inspired to succeed in Green Bay’s growing diverse community. To achieve this mission, Superintendent Michelle Langenfeld and School Board President Brenda Warren recently announced their “strategic roadmap” for the district, a plan that focuses on preparing students for 21st century learning to meet the needs of a global economy.

The Board of Education has held retreats over the past several months to define the direction of the district, and will share the strategic roadmap with the community at the following engagement sessions:
Thursday, January 17, 2013 – 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Brown County Library meeting rooms 1 & 2, 515 Pine St.

Thursday, May 16, 2013 – 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., District Office Building board room, 200 S Broadway St.

Rumor alert from the Green Bay Area Publ

Rumor alert from the Green Bay Area Public School District, Friday, December 21 http://ow.ly/gingN

Rumor Alert: Friday, December 21, 2012

Families,

We want to assure you that school safety is our top priority and your child is safe and in good hands.
We recently became aware of rumors regarding school safety. These rumors were found on social media sites. In light of recent events, these types of rumors are happening across the country. This week, the Green Bay Police Department investigated multiple rumors and could not substantiate any of them. However, a recent rumor late Thursday evening was traced back to a district student. This individual was taken into police custody early this morning. The investigating officers developed information that led them to believe that they had the source of the threat and that this threat was not credible. Charges are being sought against this student as well as disciplinary measures by the school district up to and including expulsion. Due to the age of the student, we cannot release specific information.

If you hear information regarding school safety or have concerns, you are encouraged to call the school or law enforcement. We take all information seriously and will always conduct an investigation with law enforcement. Those individuals found responsible will be held accountable with appropriate criminal charges and serious school disciplinary measures up to and including expulsion.

It should be noted that parents typically are not contacted during every investigation. In doing so, we would be instilling unnecessary uneasiness and disruption. However, when information that impacts student safety is substantiated, we will communicate with parents and our public.

Thank you and please call your principal should you have additional questions or concerns.

Friday 5: Southwest HS/NWTC Engineering/Design Partnership

Each Friday the Green Bay Area Public School District will upload a 5 minute or less video featuring a staff member, student, or program in the district. This week’s video focuses on the new partnership between NWTC and Southwest High School. This year, students receive dual district/NWTC credit for taking classes in welding, blue print reading and graphic design. Next year students will be able to take classes in robotics. Contact Southwest at (920) 492-2650 if you’d like to visit the program.

Friday 5: East High School Institute for the Fine Arts

Each Friday the Green Bay Area Public School District will upload a 5 minute or less video featuring a staff member, student, or program in the district. This week’s Friday 5 focuses on the East High School Institute for the Fine Arts. For the past two years, students have been pursuing their love of music both in and out of the classroom for high school credit and a portfolio. Next year, students interested in the visual arts will have the same opportunity. It’s “FAME,” but in Green Bay!

Watch the video to learn more, get student reaction, and hear students perform.

Southwest High School Students take “Random Acts of Kindness” Trip

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

More than 25 students from Southwest High School DECA recently gave back to the community in a unique way – through a three day “Random Acts of Kindness” trip. The trip took place Nov. 18 through Nov. 20 in Chicago, Racine and Milwaukee. Throughout the trip, students participated in activities designed to show kindness to others in a random and fun way, and give back to those in need. Students participated in events and activities such as:

  • Leaving change on a vending machine, delivering coffee and sandwiches to the homeless, handing out carnations, and giving bottled water to bus drivers.
  • Delivering stuffed animals, blankets and treats to a fire station, visiting an elementary school to read books to children, and delivering thank you notes to a veteran’s hospital.
  • Interviewing residents at an assisted living facility about their lives, delivering warm clothes to a homeless shelter, and sorting food and stocking boxes for the elderly at the Hunger Task Force in Milwaukee.

To learn more about the students’ journey, visit the Green Bay Southwest DECA Facebook page.

“Looking Ahead” Session Offers Students a Glimpse into the College Application Process

Many students have an interest in attending college after high school, but are unsure of the necessary steps to make this dream a reality. On Thursday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m., a “Looking Ahead” session will be offered in the Washington Middle School auditorium for students and their parents who are interested in learning about what can be done to increase their chances of getting accepted into the college of their choice. The session will be focused on students in grades 6-9, and is free and open to the public. Information will be shared regarding what colleges are looking for in an applicant, what kind of courses students should take, and the importance of co-curricular activities.

Washington Middle School is located at 314 South Baird Street. For more information, contact Shirley Paulson at (920) 448-2477.
