On Friday, Sept. 18 Green Bay West hosted Green Bay East as part of a 110-year rivalry that was commemorated by the Great American Rivalry Series. As a part of this special series, scholarships, Hall-of-Fame honors and other awards were given out.

The Great American Rivalry Series is a national football series that celebrates historic rivalries around the country, honoring each school’s athletes, scholars, coaches, fans and alumni.

The two teams met at West’s Del Marcelle Stadium for what is Wisconsin’s oldest high school rivalry game, dating back to their first matchup in 1905.

In addition to celebrating this historic game, two student-athletes were awarded a college scholarship for their success in the classroom. Nathaniel Osterberg received the Rivalry Scholar Student-Athlete Award for East High School. Nathaniel is a two-time senior letterman on the East football and track and field team, while being involved in National Honors Society and excelling in school.

Tyler Chanthavong received the Rivalry Scholar Student-Athlete Award for West High School, due to his three-year letter experience on both the football and track and field team, and his commitment in the classroom. Tyler plans to attend college at UW – La Crosse for athletic training next fall.

Both teams also honored several alumni for their accomplishments on the football field. East honored the 1995 East football team with a Hall of Fame award. In 1995, East won its first Fox River Valley Conference title since 1978 behind senior quarterback Ben Kolstad. East finished 6-1 in the conference and proceeded to win two playoff games for a 9-3 overall record.

West honored Dave Mason with a Hall of Fame award. Dave is a 1968 West graduate, and played in the East vs. West varsity rivalry game for two years. After high school Dave went to the University of Nebraska where he was part of back-to-back national championship seasons in 1970 and 1971. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and played with the New England Patriots, eventually coming home to play with the Green Bay Packers.

At the conclusion of the game, the Great American Rivalry Series honored East’s quarterback Deonte Carlton with an MVP award. Deonte threw for 95 yards and rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries in East’s victory.

This year’s historic rivalry officially completes 110 years of competitive play. Contrary to last year’s result, East came out victorious this year, outscoring West 49-8.
