New Grading Scale Approved July 21, 2014

GradeDuring the 2013-14 school year, a task force was established that included teachers, principals, students, parents, school board members and administrators. The task force determined that a new grading scale for the secondary level was a key component in providing meaningful instruction to all students to accurately communicate a student’s performance. On July 21, 2014, the Board of Education voted to approve the new grading scale.

The new grading scale does the following:

•Aligns with surrounding school districts, which enables Green Bay students to compete on a level playing field for college admission and scholarships.
•Provides a more accurate and clear representation of student performance.
•Incentivizes students to enroll in more academically challenging classes, such as advanced placement courses.
•Reflects most college and university grading scales.

The grading scale is just the first part of the committee’s work. During the 2014-15 school year the task force will be working on recommendations to align grading practices with high quality instruction. The grading scale will be implemented for the 2014-15 school year and is not retroactive.

It is important to note that the grading scale does not reflect the academic rigor expected in our district. Rather, academic rigor should be supported through academic expectations and practices within the classroom.
