Webster Elementary School “Art Smart” Open House Moved to Feb. 24

Webster Elem Art LogoWebster Elementary School recently became an Integrated School of the Arts, and has introduced a new art integration program called “Art Smart.” To showcase this new program and answer questions, Webster will hold an Open House on Monday, February 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The open house was previously scheduled for February 20, but has been moved to February 24. Members of the public are invited to attend and tour Webster’s piano lab, observe a violin class, and see examples of student artwork.

Within “Art Smart”, teachers at Webster collaborate with Kevin Flogel, the school’s artistic director, to integrate art, music, theater, and movement into their core curriculum. “Art Smart” provides many artistic opportunities for students. Students in second and fifth grade receive group piano or violin lessons twice per week, and fifth graders also have the opportunity to play a band instrument. After-school opportunities include dance for third and fourth graders, and show choir for third, fourth and fifth graders. Students who are strong readers can participate in reader’s theater, reading a book or story out loud with costumes and props. Webster teachers are also working on bringing in area musicians to perform at school to expose students to different types of music.

“Art Smart” will also be expanding next year to allow group music lessons to be open to students in second through fifth grade. Research shows that students involved with music score higher on standardized tests and are more likely to graduate.

Webster Elementary’s focus on the arts is just one more way that the Green Bay Area Public School District is customizing education. Webster is located at 2101 S. Webster Ave., Green Bay.
