Franklin Middle School Authorized as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme School

WorldSchool2ColourlargeAfter a rigorous and lengthy application process, Franklin Middle School has been officially authorized as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme School (IB MYP). To date, Franklin is one of only six IB MYP certified public schools in the state. Franklin is the third district school to receive IB authorization. Chappell Elementary was authorized this spring in the Primary Years Programme and West High School was authorized two years ago in the rigorous Diploma Programme for grades 11 and 12. West High School is currently in the candidacy phase in applying for IB authorization for grades 9 and 10 in the continuation of the Middle Years Programme. Once the entirety of West is authorized in fall of 2015, the Green Bay Area Public School District will be the second district in the state to offer a continuous K-12 IB educational experience.

In April of 2013, the International Baccalaureate Organization conducted an authorization site visit at Franklin, where they reviewed the curriculum and interviewed all staff involved with the program. Franklin had to demonstrate their completion of a comprehensive school review, teacher training, and new curriculum writing to meet the rigorous standards required by the IBO. After the visit, Franklin was successfully authorized in approximately two months, a process that generally takes three to four months. For the 2013-14 school year, all students attending Franklin Middle School will receive an IB MYP education. Franklin is still accepting open enrollment applications for the 2013-14 school year.

“At Franklin Middle School, we are so proud to offer our students an International Baccalaureate education,” said Franklin Principal Sandy Beyer. “The unique IB experience allows students to develop intellectually, personally, emotionally and socially in our ever-changing society. Our students will receive a 21st century education that will allow them to graduate college, career and community ready.”

Under the direct guidance of the International Baccalaureate offices, Franklin has been teaching the Middle Years Programme material for almost two years as an IB MYP Candidate School. International Baccalaureate is an educational program that works to nurture students in developing the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly changing world. IB MYP prepares students to be active participants in their lifelong learning journey.
