West High School Named an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Candidate School

GreenBayWest_mediumThe Green Bay Area Public School District is proud to announce that West High School’s application for candidacy for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) has been accepted. West High School will be officially recognized as an IB candidate school for the Middle Years Programme in September 2013. Currently, West is authorized as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme school, which includes students in grades 11 and 12. When West becomes authorized as an IB MYP school for grades 9 and 10 in fall of 2015, students in the district will have the unique opportunity to be immersed in the IB continuum from kindergarten until they graduate from high school – from Chappell Elementary, to Franklin Middle School, to West High School.

The MYP provides a framework of learning which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The program is designed to teach students to thrive in the 21st century, through the development of communication skills, intercultural understanding and global engagement. The MYP builds upon skills learned in the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) and prepares students for the challenges of the IB Diploma Programme.

Beginning in the 2015-16 school year, every student attending West High School will be enrolled in the IB program, and every teacher at West High School will be IB trained and authorized. To achieve authorization for the IB MYP, West will be assigned a consultant who will provide 20 hours of consultation, and a two-day on-site consultation visit will be scheduled.
