Webster Elementary to become “Art Smart” as an Integrated School of the Arts: Open House April 4
New for the 2013-14 school year, Webster Elementary School will become an integrated school of the arts, with art, music, theater and movement infused throughout the 4K – 5th grade curriculum. Called “Art Smart,” the new program will allow second and fifth graders to receive lessons twice per week on the violin or digital pianos from a highly qualified master teacher in addition to their regular music class. This will expand each year as the class moves up through fourth grade. In addition, fifth graders will receive lessons on the instrument of their choice twice per week, and students K-5 will have the opportunity to be involved in performing musical theater. To introduce this new program to the community, Webster will hold an open house on Thursday, April 4 at 6:00 p.m. in the Webster gym, 2101 South Webster Avenue.
Research shows that students who play music do better on standardized tests, and have a higher chance of graduating due to engagement both within school and after school. As the Institute for the Fine Arts at East High School develops and grows stronger, it becomes even more important to introduce children to music at a younger age to prepare them for future studies in music.
