East High School Academic Decathlon Team Places 5th in Division 1 State Competition; 14th Overall

After competing in the regional level at UW – Green Bay on January 11 and taking second place, the East High School academic decathlon team advanced to the state competition in Wisconsin Dells on March 14 and 15. The academic decathlon competition takes students from all high school academic levels, and breaks them into grade categories. Participants take six multiple choice tests in math, language and literature, economics, science/social science, music and art. Besides the tests, decathletes also had to do an interview, a prepared and impromptu speech, and write an essay. As a team, East placed 5th in division 1 and 14th overall in the state. East also brought home the team title in the interview portion of the competition, and fell only 35 points short of claiming the team title in speech.

Advised by Matt Vandenhouten and Scott Willems, the East academic decathlon team members include: Landon Renard, Sophia Kiernan, Kurtis Casperson, Matthew Connors, Evan Ash, Troy LeCaire, Joe Westenberg, Zeb Patek and David Wichlacz. Individual awards achieved are as follows:
