East High School Academic Decathlon Team Takes 2nd in Regional Competition; Advances to State Level

After competing in the regional level at UW – Green Bay on January 11 and taking second place, the East High School academic decathlon team will advance to the state competition in Wisconsin Dells on March 14 and 15. The academic decathlon competition takes students from all high school academic levels, and breaks them into grade categories. Participants take six multiple choice tests in math, language and literature, economics, science/social science, music and art. During the regional competition, decathletes also had to write an essay, prepare a speech, present an impromptu speech, and participate in a formal interview. Twenty schools and 180 team members have qualified to advance to the state competition.

Advised by Matt Vandenhouten and Scott Willems, the East academic decathlon team performed as follows:
Evan Ash: 3rd overall in division, 1st speech, 2nd social science/science, 3rd interview, 4th music, 5th art
Matthew Connors: 1st essay, 4th math, 6th social/science and music
Kurtis Casperson: 1st essay, 5th language & literature
Sophia Kiernan: 1st speech
Troy LeClaire: 1st economics, 2nd math, 4th language & literature, 5th music
Zeb Patek: 2nd overall in division, 1st language & literature and essay, 3rd economics and interview, 4th science/social science and speech, 5th art
Landon Renard: 6th interview, 6th math
Joe Westenberg: 7th language & literature and economics
David Wichlacz: 5th overall in division, 3rd speech and art, 5th language & literature and interview
