Every morning at Eisenhower Elementary School, 400 students begin their school day with full stomachs, active minds, and a sharper focus thanks to a new universal breakfast program funded through federal and state reimbursement dollars. Implemented this October, students eat breakfast with their classmates from 8:10 a.m. to 8:27 a.m. before school begins each day. The breakfast is free for all students in grades K – 5, and food items include cereal, yogurt, string cheese, fresh fruit and more. The new program has already helped improve school attendance, and is expected to help improve students’ memory and problem solving skills, increase students’ energy level, and improve nutrition.
